My Big Never-Told-Before Story

Astrobiology (other terms have been exobiology, exopaleontology, and bioastronomy) is the study of the origin, evolution, distribution, and future of life in the universe
-Wikipedia

I'm in office and extremely bored. Luckily my boss is on leave ;-) and people in accounts department are on leave as well, the other marketing people are on duty, and so the whole floor is just for me and this one particular HR person. With sad songs in the background(Courtesy: Worldspace KL Radio) and just the computer for company, I was wondering what to do. Almost all the fun websites are blocked in my office but I just typed www.blogger.com and yay! it does work here. So here I am! After a long long time...

(Also I should say the reason why I typed Blogger. Nithi has been featured as "Diamond Chef" for her 4thsensesamayal blog in www.solkadi.com Nice saree there Nithi! Get married soon! You're my inspiration in a lot of things including blogs and sarees :-P)

Okie...so the reason for this post. Today I saw a news in Yahoo! about an UFO sighting in UK. Coincidentally, two days ago, I was asking Burfi if he believed in extra terrestrials, and I was Wiki-ing for Aliens. Maybe you guys are wondering why I have this obsession for aliens. Because we(Bhuvana, her sisters and I) saw a spaceship once from my terrace! (I can hear you saying.."Ha ha! Good joke!") *Ta ra ta ra* Presenting my big story in public after so many years.

Long long ago, it was the day when Mars was coming very close to the earth and it was said it'll be pretty bright and we can see it in the night sky very clearly. So being the star gazers(or gazing at anything attractive :P) that we are, we went to the terrace to see Mars. And what did we see? A spaceship! An UFO! Maybe the picture I'm giving you along with this might sound like I've flicked it from some movie/website and just drew it in Paint, but that was what we saw anyway. A dome like thing on top which blinked different colour lights, a saucer and something below that kept spinning very fast. We first thought it was an airplane or something, but from being just a speck of light, it was clearly big as a spaceship in seconds...and it just zoomed off in zig zag direction before we could realize what it actually was. I remember Bhuvana and I shouting, "UFO! Hey Martian! Come take us!! We need adventure!!" (I don't know why we thought a Martian might know English and not Tamil!) Lol. We were those kids who were always fantasizing about whatever we read in books/saw in movies, and adventures with aliens were right on top of the list. I remember us running down and telling dad what we saw. I even drew diagrams for him, I think he didn't really believe me. We shoved Priya in front(she was a really kutti kid back then...say 2nd or 3rd std or something) and we were like, "kids don't lie. Ask her what she saw". But unfortunately she described the UFO sighting like how Mrs. Figgs explained Dementors(for non Potter fans, sorry. I didn't know how to describe it better). So bang went our big story, and without pictures or anything, we didn't have anything to prove ourselves and be famous :-P :-(

(Special Thanks to Alaina for believing us)

All we could do was sit and watch My Favorite Martian in Star Movies a few days later.

Inji

My dad sits at home reading a magazine in the evening, when he suddenly feels a shadow moving around. He looks below and sees a fur ball sitting... a tiny tiny ginger cat, very weak but still way too cute. I then called Bhuvana, and then the whole crowd turned up... Bhuvana managed to even cuddle it, in her lap! We named it Inji(Ginger), according to its looks. Inji climbed my dad's veshti like a mountain, and got into his lap comfortably. We all fell in love with the little kittie.

Next day, Inji got sick, both its hindlegs were sort of paralysed, we took it to the vet, got an injection put, and got some vitamin tablets written from the vet. Inji drank milk from an ink filler, diluted tablet after that, and then slept peacefully. It even tried to jump onto Bhuvana's lap, moving just the two legs, and dragging the hinds.

In the evening, I had to go out. Bhuvana fed it with milk in the evening. At around 7:30, mum and dad thought it could do with more milk. By then, one of Inji's front legs got paralysed too. Inji drank milk from the ink filler, hiccuped for a few times.. hic hic..and then its head swayed to one side. Inji is in heaven now. Bhuvana didn't have dinner that night. I'm glad I wasn't home to see that sight. This is exactly why I'm scared of having pets.

It was a hap hap happy birthday!

"Today is my birthday. I had a great day. " --> This used to be an oxymoron!! This year it isn't, and I can't believe it! All thanks to my little devil, and the bigger devil from above, my day was SUPER.

23 phone calls, 42 messages, 60 odd scraps in orkut & facebook... 9 people actually coming in to surprise me!! WHOAH... what more can someone ask for?!?! (Okay.. I know you are thinking I'm a weirdo.. giving you numbers and all.. but yea, I'm a weirdo, and proud of it :)

For a change, when people started calling to wish me, and asked "What plans for the day?", this time around I had an interesting answer. All thanks to Supri :-)

Jaya woke me up with a warm hug, Lawanya turned up, I went to the temple(Really?!), went to Periamma's house, and then off to Supri's. I was welcomed by Supri's wailings- "I called around 50 people Vedha... I hate your classmates... I'm so sorry... people backed off at the last moment... I even tried calling Jaya & Bhuvana... blah blah blah". Then people turned up. Not 50, but 9 people who decided to spend their time with me on my D-day :) Great fun we had. Mrudhula licking the cake even before I cut it, Supri using the mop like one 'soolayudham' and posing for pictures, talking CRAP, teasing everybody around, us getting to figure out if the juniors have boyfriends, having a cake facial :p it all looked to me like it was a scene fresh out of a fairy tale!

Then, off to Radio One, where I was again tortured by Jagan(as usual!) to make me dance the 'Egypt Rani' step (Enna koduma sir idhu!) with Nandhini and Rajiv egging on & Mrudhula, Shilpa and Supri laughing their heads off. Some entertainment! After we got done there, when the 4 of us were thinking where to go hog, Supri & I decided the time has FINALLY arrived to discover JC's Cafe! *tada tadain* What a place! (Tip: If you are looking for some place, where NOBODY you know would turn up, try JC's Cafe!) We were the only people in, apart from a few foreigners who were in another room. We hogged (Shilpa resisting temptation in vain!) like hell. Then, when it was the time to say the 3 bad words ('Pay the bill'), Jee-boom-ba, John(notice Pink sattai in picture) calls Mrudhula and asks her where we are. (He drinks juice at JC's regularly!) He came up to JC's with 2 other people, drank watermelon juice, and paid my bill :-) :D Lucky me! lol.

I finally came back home around 8, after Supri dropped me at the bus stand as usual. Went straight to Bhuvana's house, met the family and then got back home. Mum and dad were okay with whatever I got and except for the usual "I dunno why people spend so much money to get birthday gifts" dialogue(which is perfectly normal...), I didn't get anything hostile, which is like 'wow!'.

For all the people who made my day special, Thank you! trust me, you don't even have the wildest idea how much this means to me. And for the person, who scripted this day from above, just a 'miss you' wouldn't convey everything.

PS: Picture courtesy - Nithi in Orkut

You made me remember the good times
When i could only remember the bad
You promised me a return
Of the peace i long ago had
You never left me alone
When that was what i wrongly thought i needed
You never dwelt on my faults
Instead you pointed out when i had succeeded
You made me laugh
When i felt i would cry
You made me live
When i wished to die.

Radiance- Spreading light!

Damn... Supri beat me to this by 34 minutes!! I was just going to write this, and I see her post smirking at me!

One Sunday evening, PROPERLY spent, seriously! My sundays are usually filled with absolute vettiness, with me having nothing to do except, say, watch a movie, or catch up on some sleep. But this sunday, well, it was different.

Two days ago, in the marshy lanes of Madhavaram (well, if you don't know where Madhavaram is, go hang yourself or drop in to Perambur, I'll take you there!), when I was going to visit my junior Divya's house, I get a call.

Hi.. I'm Gayathri, Sukanya's van mate, u remember me?

oh well.. hi gayathri, yea, of course i remember u.. tell me

are u free on sunday? we have a program, and i want u to... wait...

*lots of background noise*

hi vedha.. this is sumana... mrudhula's friend... there's a show on sunday that i want u to host..

(trying to figure out who sumana is...and completely confused) ok.. i guess i can do it. wat show? can u give me details?

*lots of background noise again*

hi... im jayanth

oh.. hi jayanth

see.. there is this album that we're releasing.. well, hey can u come over to my place, so i can tell u details?
well.. im in a place called madhavaram, and i'm pretty sure you don't even know where it is..

well, no i dont..

yea, it is chennai outskirts, and im out here.. so i cant come now.. maybe you could e-mail me the stuff?

ya, ok, sure.. take down my no...u can probably send ur e-mail id in there..

And, the rest, as they say, is history. Jayanth got stuck in traffic the whole day, and the MS Phone idea he had, didn't work, cuz I slept off really early that day, and so the next day, I, dragging Supri(as usual!) went upto his place(Thank Heavens to Kowshik! who overwhelmed us with his hospitality.. ), ate பாதுஷா, கை முறுக்கு and தேன்குழல்(thanks to Jayanth's mom, who probably understood our hunger pang!), and listened to their amazing tracks! (More from the composer here: http://www.acidplanet.com/artist.asp?songs=630013&T=7049 )

Radiance(I love the name!) is a band of 10 or 12 people(Please confirm with Jayanth! :) who have come together to create a music album for the orphanage Anbu Karangal (http://www.anbukarangal.org/). The proceeds from the sale of the album, goes to the orphanage. Amazing, don't ya think?

The band consists of a few ex-MOPians, and men from Sai Ram engg, among other people. But, it was not just a band of 12 people. SOO many friends lent a helping hand and the parents gave in their full support, their colleges sponsored the event, people like Chinmayi and M.K. Balaji sang for the album... It was such a collective effort, and I'm soo proud I could at least be a teeny weeny part of it. And, Supri played a big part in me being a part of it by being my official chauffeur(ok, it was only her Scooty Pep.. but yea..).

In the process, I finally found out who Sumana is (Eureka!), got to see Gayathri in a saree, got bored to death by Mr. Chairman of Sai Ram Engg(See: Annexure I), and got scolded from a guy("போடி நாயே!") who I've only known for a day! I made quite a few new friends, and got to know more about old college acquaintances, and MOST important, I could be myself after a long time!, so all in all, a day well spent!!!! (only regret being lots of guys calling me, அக்கா! என்ன கொடுமை சார் இது! )

ANNEXURE I:

Questions posed by Mr. Chairman

(Through the ENTIRE conversation, Mr. EEE HOD kept nodding his head!)

1. What are the FM stations in Chennai, apart from AIR?

2. Do you think it is commerically viable for us to start a FM station? We want to spread education

*Vedha desparately searches for someone to rescue her at this point, but in vain!*ஆனா, அவங்களுக்கு, தனி கொடி இருக்கு... but நாம 61/2 கோடி பேர், நமக்கு ஏன் கோடி இல்ல? தலைவர் பிரபாகரன்(Note: It is the LTTE leader) கு மறைமுகமா ஒரு letter போடணும்! இந்த gulf countries பேரு எல்லாம், எனக்கு தேடி தரியா மா? ஜெயந்த் கிட்ட கொடுத்து அனுப்பு!

Birthdays...

My birthdays have always been comic tragedies. Slap from dad, rain gods POURING their heart out, schools declared a holiday cuz of bad weather... funny it is. I used to dread birthdays, cuz for me, they always meant something-wrong. I've cut a birthday cake on two occasions...yea, TWO occasions. One for my 10th birthday, when my neighbourhood was filled by Anglo Indians and one, last year. I've had pictures taken on my birthday once. And out of those 4 pictures, I'm there in only one, with profile view and cake not seen(which you can see here!). And, from my 11th standard till last year, all my birthdays were government declared holidays, due to the 'puyal chinnam' in Bay of Bengal (which ended up bringing sunny weather all over!) My birthday is bewitched! But amidst all this comedy, my friends have always tried to make it special. People have waddled through pools of water to my place, just to drop in a birthday wish! They've stayed awake all night patiently bearing the "call waiting" or engaged tones to sing the birthday song in the midnight. My penpals from afar always remembered to send me huge packages bringing all their love from 1000s of miles apart. This loWe will make this year, and every birthday special :)

PS: I just got a pretty pale pink kurta today for the 29th. Supri got a similar one too, and one day you can see us in this uniform!

Sourav Ganguly - why I love him

Sourav Ganguly has ALWAYS been my favorite cricketer. I can never list out reasons, but maybe I like people who have an air of self-confidence and power around themselves(he dislikes the word 'arrogance' to be used on him), WITH the determination and right to deserve it, and Dada is the epitome of this quality.

He made Steve Waugh wait for the toss.
He tossed his shirt in Lords' and Andrew Flintoff was clean-bowled!
He was dropped from the side, he cameback STRONGLY and scored over 1000 runs in 2007!
He created a brand-new aggressive Indian site which was never known to have existed before.
He knew when to talk back, and has always been a TIGER, waiting to pounce!

And now, he's announced his retirement. 2 more tests...and puff! he would be gone from the International arena... will miss him!!!!!!!!!!!!!

*******

Nobody is a born captain. Most of the time, I have gone on instinct.

- When his captaincy was criticized.

I know what I am. People can label me as they like but it upsets me to hear the word arrogant being used against me. I am not arrogant. Not at all.

- On being called arrogant.

I am here to win games not popularity contests.

- On being criticized by the English media while touring England in July 2002.

We obviously don't get support from outside, so we support each other and will continue to do so whatever happens in the rest of the tournament.

- On why the ‘huddle’ was invented during the World Cup.

I believe in my ability to score runs and that is what I look to do. It happens sometimes that people get after you. But you have to take in your stride. It’s a professional sport so one has to go ahead.

- After he scored a ton against Australia at Brisbane and proved all his detractors wrong.

We know, and they know, that we can beat them.

- said a rather cocky Sourav after beating Australia.

We will try and pull the chain and stop the train midway!

- When asked how his team plan to counter Shoaib Akhtar, known as the Rawalpindi Express.

To be honest I do not believe in sitting back and taking things which are not right. If it is right, I am up to it, I listen to you, and try to rectify. But if you are not, I am not a sort of person to sit back and listen.

- Ganguly told PTI in an exclusive interview.

Don't stand under the sun waiting for me. I am not going to say anything.

- Sourav refuses to comment on his exclusion in October 2005.

Then, in the 2003 series (on India's tour to Australia), Steve (Waugh) said that let's be on time for the toss now. I said: 'If you behave, I will'.

- Sourav

It’s on hold till I get big runs. - On whether he is celebrating his return to the team

I haven’t made technical adjustments... The adjustment has all been in the mind.

- Dada on his changed batting technique since his comeback

I would like to be remembered as someone who has taken Indian cricket forward…someone who tried his best every time he went out to play for the country.

- Dada

If I am not in a good mood, I will keep to myself. I am terribly sensitive. Over the years, after I got hammered, I have hardened. I still react explosively especially when something wrong happens to anyone, even to fellow cricketers. I hate people treating others badly. But if I do not like someone, I will quietly keep away.

– On how he is as a person

**********

Sourav is a great captain and we should be proud of such a leader. Kapil Dev

Sourav’s greatest strength is his mind. He is hardworking - not only in the nets but also mentally. He bounces back. Sachin Tendulkar

On the offside, first there is God, then Sourav Ganguly. Rahul Dravid

Sourav’s greatest asset is his ability to communicate. He is a naturally very confident person. He encourages his team, is a great motivator and a born captain. He is not the media’s blue eyed boy because he is a very straightforward person, who never minces his words, instead he talks in a no nonsense manner to the press. He shares an extremely healthy rapport with his teammates. His leadership skills are also vouched for by the youngsters in the team. He has phenomenal brand value. He's the new-age Indian, an aggressive go-getter, full of self-belief, determination. Ravi Shashtri

Ever since Sourav became the captain, I do not feel like a youngster in the team any more. Everybody is treated equally and Sourav himself is extremely approachable and a pillar of strength. Sourav stood by me when I was struggling. I owe a great deal to him for standing by me at the most important time. I can't express my gratitude to him in words. Harbhajan Singh

Sourav is really the best captain India has ever had. Sunil Gavaskar

Ganguly is the new Steve Waugh of mind games. Ian Healy

He's the type of bloke you would want to have on your side. When you see an Indian side with Ganguly in the line-up, you know it's game on. You don't have to like or dislike him. You have to respect him. - Steve Waugh

29 C A/C Volvo Bus

I absolutely love travelling to and from college in the bus (ONLY when the bus is not crowded/ I get a seat!) and today, me being the whimsical person I am, decided to travel by the brand-new A/C Volvo 29 C!
Maybe I wanted to treat myself for writing the Software Engineering eggjam well (considering the way I studied yesterday :) or maybe I just had too much money, I wanted to spend Rs. 23 for no reason... :p Anyway, I just wanted to tell you...experience this fun ride, if one of these buses ply in your route. (Find details here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_MTC_bus_routes) In old movies, anybody who comes from the village to the Chennai பட்டணம் will always look up to the LIC (Bang! Scene shifts from village to Chennai!). Now, people are looking up to this bus, like its some exhibit. When the bus waits in the bus stop, you can see a lot of people hesitating...and then climbing in with a resolute look. And, they all do feel good when they come in :) The bus plays music, the conductor and driver have safaris as their uniform (or are they safaris? it looks more like a சேட்டு கல்யாண band வாத்திய uniform for me!) I think everyone should have a ride in this latest Chennai phenomenon... alone.

A big chunk of advice

I made the right decision in asking "the controversial exiled long-long-ago Indian prince(who later became king)" for advice. First right thing I've done in the past few days. (Dad would probably say my horoscope is getting better.)

* Stay alone. Its better that way. You came alone, you leave alone, so it shouldn't be that difficult to stay alone. (Vedha's weird thought right now: does this apply to twins/triplets/quadruplets?!?)

* Don't give your opinions.

* Don't start conversations.

* Don't comment.

("Does this look good on me?
~ "Oh yeah, looks great". THE END.
*heck no! this doesn't suit u AT ALL*-keep that to yourself)

* Although the tongue weighs only a little, only a few are able to hold it. "You wrote this in my notebook years back, and I've cut it out, and kept it safe. Learn to hold it yourself. You have 10 words to say, just say 1. The rest, keep it to yourself.

* Okay. Somebody hates you. So?

* Friends and Collegemates are two entirely different entities. Why confuse both?!

And, this advice I'm REALLY taking it. Trust me, I mean it when I say it(or type it...)

OLAP and LINK 2008

Being a student of MOP, and a student of the Department of Computer Science, ONLINE club activities take up most of August every year. Same this year, too.

This year we (Vedha- Vice President, Supri- Treasurer, Deepti & Sukanya- Joint Secretaries, and a bunch of other people who are blah blah) successfully(or so I wish to think) DID IT!

OLAP 08' saw over 15 colleges competing, which is a great deal according to our Principal, so that's good. But the teams were sad, and as always, LINK had better standard.

HCL gave us the overall sponsorship 35000!!! And totally, we got around Rs. 55000 sponsorship. Wow! So HCL INSISTED that they will bring judges for Paper presentation and debugging.... ;)

Trophies were a major disappointment, a few people fucked up the ordering of trophies and we ended up with lousy ones(compared to last year), but they were still decent, come on!

We got the great Mr. Arun Mozhi as the judge for Creative Singing. Thanks a lot, Arun!! You made the event a big success. Arun's sarcastic comments and so-called advices made the atmosphere very lively. The most devoted employee of Radio One, he wrote, "Ajal Gujal Majaa" in the visitors book. என்னே ஒரு பற்று!! அட அட அட....

Rajiv replaced Raj anna for Ad zap, along with Thyagu Sir. And I would like to bestow Raj Anna with the choicest of swear words for not being able to make it. Rajiv wore shades inside the auditorium, and wrote, "Thanks for the juice!" in the visitors book. Typical him!

20th August was LINK. We came 2nd in ad zap which was the greatest disappointment ever in the recent times, because I thought we actually did a really good job. Kavitha ma'am, ex- English HOD was the judge, so cursing is curbed. We had a super cool topic- SPEAKERS. B.Sc CS 3rd years came first :(
In the afternoon, we went to Ethiraj College ad-zap (வேற என்ன வேலை?!?) and we actually thought we weren't all that great(These girls raised my BP, coming in at the LAST minute to Ethi!! DUH), but we came first. They gave us "quantitative aptitude" by RS Agarwal as prize. How thoughtful :p B.Sc CS(representing MOP day) came 2nd. So there's our revenge!!
We came first in Creative Singing(Again, lousy topic - Job sites, their uses and influence. The original song version will come later!)

And, BCA ROCKS!!! First in Debugging, Salad Programming, Paper presentation, Ship Wreck, Creative Singing, Technovate. Second in Ad zap, Technovate. Third in Poster Designing, Technovate, Ad Zap, Creative Singing. (Yeah, Technovate all three came to us! Ad zap, 2nd and 3rd is us, first years keeping up the ad zap tradition) But the biggest happiness is, we didn't place in Quiz, proving ourselves to be the most un-nerdy lot :) :)
Just wished Abilasha had been this good :(

Life at MOP- Courtesy: Sandhya!!

This is one of the best ever things written about MOP. You gotta see this!!!!!!

Disclaimer: This is not a Guide to sruvival in MOP, this is just the tip of the ice-berg.
Am sure the "Alive" memebers and the newbies in the comm will have lotssss to post in this..

Day 1 in college: You'll meet ur "respected" teachers :D Your so-called class faculty will try making all of you talk on various topics, which is actually veryyyyyyy funnyy... At the fag end of the day, you will meet your "Seniors", Yes! Alllllll of them will try to fit in inside your classroom, they'll try making u sing (Yeahhh!), dance, and hell a lot of other things, which may or may not make any sense depending on ur sensibilites.

One week later, you girls wud be pretty accustomed to coming to coll in the sweltering heat!! By this time you wud know who is who and who's who. (Hope you get the pun)

By the time you realise what's happening your seniors will start hounding you with auditons for the fresher cults and you'll have ur first internals coming up!! You will be asked to cough up money...

Once your cults are over the REAL life in MOP starts, home-works, assignments, seminars, projects, you name it; we have it! And mind you evrything carries marks..!

The college isnt organised, its the epitome of chaosss!! Apart from this, you'll have records to finish, this is done by copying ur frnds program literally and figuratively..!

Life is chaotic beyond description! You run around to finish your assignments, burn the midnight oil to finish tht crappy project, spend hoursss online looking for that elusive program which you can pass off as "your" program, (some teachers will buy it), run from pillar-to-post to get papers photocopied, waste JK Copiers for ur projects,, which will not receive more than a mere glance, on programs, outputs and algorithms which receive a tick.

Next come the Semester exams! Lol yeah.. Ppl actually try studying for the semesters.
We in MOP study like the others do, we start off the night before the examination , stay up alll night, come groggy eyed to the exam, crib bout the paper, swear at the lecturer, try cramming until the examiner screams out "garlsss comeee innnnn for the n-th time"
Well, the rest as they say is "history" !

t was quite scarryyy soo far, now I'll tell u the fun part of MOP
1) The cults!
2) You can SMS for hourrssss in the class. (This I slightly disagree...MOBILES BANNED NOW IN THE COLLEGE PEOPLE!!!)
3) You can doze off in any position, the teacher will be least bothered.
4) The CANTEEN..! ...
5) You can use the lab hours to catch up on gossip, just make sure you dont sit in groups.
There are more, but cant think of any.. Brain-Fuel-Exhausted.

Tips to Keep your sanity intact.
1) Be a NICE GARAL(literally and figuratively).
2) Make "Frindsheep" with the women in the dept. Appo appo oru colgate smile.
3) Don't underestimate anybody, the looozaah of ur class might beat you hands-down.
4) Be on your toes.
5) Make sure you get goood publicity...

Finally, Life in MOP is a rat-race, and its a maaaddd-maaaddd-maaaaaaaaaddddddddd world out there.. Hang in there, and you'll be thru in no time!

Cheerzz!

The pitch called life!

The spirits were high at the Wanderer’s stadium. India Vs South Africa, finals of the Honda Cup. India were 256/6, struggling to get to the total 262 with two balls remaining. Dinu Rathore, the Indian all-rounder was at 47 playing resplendently. Deepak Patnakar, the fresh blood to the Indian team, was at the non-striker’s end, eagerly awaiting his maiden one-day international fifty. The young wicket-keeper was determined to get that, and, a win for his team. He was playing good, with 49 runs in just 30 balls and 2 stumpings in the previous session.
Dinu Rathore was waiting for the ball, and it came in full swing, he struck hard and the ball went hurtling, he called for a run, then a second, and then, a third, almost impossible run, but Deepak readily obeyed, he didn’t care about his fifty anymore, all it mattered was the win. He was half-way through, but Dinu was unmoved, for the South-African star fielder Mark Fletcher had already stopped the running ball. Dinu wanted to get his 38th fifty in style; he was not going to get out saving this teeny boy. No, not Dinu. Deepak ran back, but the red ball struck the stumps and he was out, out for 49.
He was shocked by Dinu’s behaviour; Deepak knew he could’ve got there if he had tried his best to. He made his way to the pavilion, disheartened.
Shiv Subramaniam came in for the last ball at the non-striker’s end. 1 ball and 4 runs, the emotions were running wild, the minority Indian crowd was heard well above the South Africans. “Four!! Four!! We want four!!” the South-African bowler came running, “Go, Dinu, go!!” the bowler released the ball “Dinu! Dinu!” Dinu struck it “Four!! Four!!” and four it was! India won the match!! The crowd went berserk. Dinu was named man of the match for his splendid all-round performance. He was hero for the crowd, but not for Deepak. He knew he could’ve got the 3 runs for his team, if only he had stayed on, and, he would’ve reached his fifty.
But, Deepak didn’t know Dinu well. The others did, and a good thing they did too because Dinu wasn’t a person to be crossed.
Dinu was born in a respectably good family who took care of all his basic needs, but he was never content. He always wanted more and his one and only passion was cricket. He had to battle his way through to get to the team. The battle had made him strong, and, head-strong. All it mattered to him was the cricket pitch, victory in the game, his victory in the pitch. The game was everything for him; he held no respect for any values or for the people. He never cared about that pitch, which was even grassier, full of turners and unexpected twists than the cricket pitch, the pitch called Life. He was nonchalant and selfish. He never played charity matches, because he knew ‘money matters’ and only that mattered. The team was playing a lot of charity matches lately, because in South-Africa, an epidemic had spread, and people were struggling to find places in the hospital, leave alone, money for treatment.
But Dinu never cared who wants to help filthy, rotting ailing people when there were beautiful things to be seen and done, with his money!
They had a week off after the one-dayers before the test match. The team was playing charity matches, but Dinu was out in the country enjoying himself - South African food, South African countryside, and South African girls.
There was a warm-up match on Thursday with the A team of the hosts, before the 1st test on Saturday. Dinu was opening then, as he always did, in such matches and the South-African speedster Nako Kamata was bowling the first over. Dinu was facing the ball, and unexpectedly, Kamata’s deadly in swinger struck him hard right above the knee as he moved to avoid the ball. He was knocked down and was rushed to the hospital immediately.
Dinu was told to be under rest for 2 months, and he was not supposed to travel at least for a month, which also meant no cricket of course. Dinu was stuck in South Africa without anything to do. He was mad with rage, shouting at everyone who came his way. He was almost psychologically depressed. He was not going to play the first 3 test matches against the hosts.
The once beautiful South Africa suddenly seemed a desert to him. He was kept along with the other patients in the hospital; he couldn’t get a special place, because everywhere else was full- the epidemic. South Africa had good doctors, but no good rooms to occupy, for the moment. To Dinu, it was torturous. Watching the patients move about covered with band-aids, and nurses with masks on, the familiar hospital stink and moreover, not able to watch the matches even on TV. The daily newspaper irritated him and he was not even able to bang his legs in frustration. He became more and more animal-like.
A never-ending week passed away. The only intriguing happening to think over was this little black child. Dinu didn’t know who she was nor did he want to. But he was intrigued by her behaviour, and what she was doing in the hospital. Dinu first saw her adjusting his blanket, a filthy ragged creature with hair sticking onto ends, like Topsy in Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Maybe she was one such Topsy. She had smiled at him, an innocent smile, when she saw he was awake, but Dinu didn’t need such acquaintances, he had shooed her away. Her serenity had never left her face, she went as she had come, silently.
Dinu started seeing her everyday then, hurrying around swiftly, passing medicines and adjusting the beds of the sick and helping them. Her face showed no signs of hatred or indifference towards anything. She was there day and night, and day after day, Dinu kept wondering what brought this little kid into this hell hole. One day, his curiousity got the better out of him; and he asked the nurse who came to tend him. “Nurse…” “Yes, Mr. Rathore!” said she, being obviously pleased at being addressed by the famous cricketer. “Well, that girl, over there. Who is she?” “Oh, her!” the nurse went back to her old drawl, “That’s Tiko”. “Tiko? Where does she live?” “Here” “Here! But doesn’t she have a home? Family?” Rathore looked up, but the nurse was already down the corridor.
Rathore couldn’t sleep well that day, and he knew it was not only because of his pain.
The next day, Rathore saw Tiko coming down to the ward. She was cleaning the bed next to him. Rathore said tentatively, “Tiko?”
“Sir called Tiko? Sir called me?” She sounded really excited.
“Yeah, hi! How do you do? “Rathore Sir asked Tiko how Tiko is. Tiko tells grand-children this, Sir. Tiko tells”, she said in broken English.
He smiled at her innocence. “So, you know who I am?”
“Know! Tiko knows everything about you, Sir. Tiko is a big fan of you. Tiko watches cricket when she has time”.
“So, what do you do here, Tiko?”
“Tiko works here, in hospital, Sir.”
“Work! Here?? Don’t you have a home?”
“This is Tiko’s home. Tiko lived here all her life”
“Where are your parents? Don’t you have a family?”
“Tiko’s daddy- slave. Died. Mummy sold. No brothers, no sisters. All sold or dead. Tiko doesn’t know.” The small eyes suddenly flooded with tears, but just for a moment. “Tiko has work, Sir. That lady needs Tiko help”. She showed a lady who was down with the epidemic, she was flushed with fever. “Tiko sees Sir later, Tiko is honoured”. She smiled her usual smile and ran away.
Dinu looked at her with awe. The thought of mourning a lost family is painful, but not knowing whether her family was lost or not, was really excruciating. And still, there she was, smiling and tending to the people, who were looked down upon with great dislike. For the first time, Dinu realized that he had never lost a loved one. Or was he too busy with his game, he didn’t even realize the losses he had suffered? For the second consecutive day, Dinu didn’t sleep well.
The next day, Tiko came up bringing his medicines. He smiled at her.
“Tiko, how often do you bathe?”
“Once in a week, Sir”
He shrugged. “Nurse asked you, Sir, whether you want to walk today with Tiko’s help?” She sounded hopeful.
“Well, Tiko…” he said, looking at her rags, “Sir says yes, if Tiko washes and dresses herself properly, and combs her beautiful hair well”.
Her smile waned. “Tiko doesn’t have money for dress, Sir and no time to dress”
“Don’t they pay you here, Tiko?”
“Yes, Sir. Food and 5 rands a month”
“5 rands!!!” That was the money with which he paid tips to the waiters.
“Yes, Sir.” She smiled.
“Well, if I give you money Tiko, will you dress yourself up well?”
“No, no, Sir. Tiko doesn’t take money, from anybody.
“But this is my command Tiko. You must do it.” He took some money from his wallet and gave it to her.
“Thank you, Sir. You are so kind.” She said, and ran away. Dinu felt a happiness creep over him, but he didn’t know what it was.
The next day, Tiko took Dinu out for a walk. She showed all her friends, all the people who were in the beds. “They are my only friends, Sir. So they change.” She laughed.
“This is Tikilo. His hands and legs not working”. She showed a 5 year old boy. “You mean, he is paralyzed?” “No, Sir. Tikilo’s hands, legs not working”. She signaled his hands and legs which were down like logs. Dinu shuddered. “That’s what I meant”, he said. Tikilo smiled at him. Dinu looked at him down, thought of his rage at not being able to move his limbs for some months, and felt ashamed, to the core.
“Tzu la Rathore creva?”, Tiko asked a lady next to him. She nodded. “La! Sir, Llosu knows you too! You are so famous and you, my friend.” She smiled heartily. “Can’t she talk?” Dinu asked.
“Talk? No talk, Sir. Llosu lost talk and eyes in fever”. He looked down at her closely; her eyes had no light in them. He thought to himself, “She can’t see me, or the beautiful sea and the beautiful countryside, or this little kid who is an Angel. And I, I was shouting at everyone for not being able to watch TV.” Suddenly he was brought back to the present, Tiko was looking at him. He smiled and they walked down to meet Tiko’s other “friends”.
By the end of his walk, Dinu was feeling dizzy, not because of the physical pain, but because of the mental agony he was going through. He felt contaminated, contaminated with power, position and money. He finally began to realize there was more to life than just the cricket pitch. Life itself was one such pitch- but no captain can ask the grounds men to make it to suit his team’s needs. No, it was made by one grounds man- God. And only the best players, who are capable of playing on any pitch, could survive to become known, to be men-of-the-match.
Dinu recovered soon to the doctors’ amazement. But what was even more amazing to his team-mates was, the first match he played after his recovery, was a charity match. All proceeds to the hospital. He wanted to adopt Tiko, but she refused. “Tiko’s friends need her”, she said, and ran away. But she came back. “Can I have Sir’s autograph?” Dinu smiled and wrote down, “To my Angel, who resurrected me. With Thanks, Rathore”.
The Rathore charity trust became a known organization for generous help to all kinds of helpless people. After his death, Dinu Rathore became known not only for his outstanding achievements on the cricket pitch, but also for his achievements as a human being in bringing smiles to millions of faces, for his achievements in the pitch called life.
